2024 Paris Olympics Track and Field _ Nike Running | Computational Design

2024 was the first olympic season for me designing for nike, with the insights from NSRL, I was part of the innovation design team that helps to bring improved stability to a visual language on multiple track spikes.

Fit for the world's fastest, the Maxfly 2 is back in the starting blocks. Designed for the 100 meters to 400 meters (hurdle events too), it combines an ultra-aggressive feel with the responsiveness of an Air Zoom unit to propel the speediest sprinters on the planet. We updated the base and upper from the previous iteration to help optimize the Air Zoom unit's speed. You also get improved stability and control on both straightaways and turns as you hightail it to the tape.

Designer’s notes

While designing for Maxfly, Victory and Dragonfly, we wanna to carry the same design language to three of them while maintaining elite performance.

When you look at Maxfly and Victory, both spikes carries the same asymmetrical linear ribs that helps with stability on both straight and curved tracks. Computational designed surfaces between the ribs not only helps the ribs perform better, but also elevate the visual continuity through the plate design.

Built for Speed

Lighter and more responsive than the previous version, the carbon fiber Flyplate's shape and stiffness give you a propulsive feel. It helps keep you on your toes and minimize deceleration.

Zoom, Zoom

The forefoot Air Zoom unit has two chambers to give you propulsion and stability from takeoff to the tape.

Stable for Straightaways

We removed the middle spike from the original Maxfly and elevated the platform on the big-toe side. This helps the spikes feel more stable on straightaways and around the turn.

Secure Fit

Nike Flyweave construction on the upper provides a secure and conforming fit for various foot shapes

Champions 2024

Champions 2024

Paris 2024

There is nothing better than seeing athletes perform at their best in footwear I designed for them. Hundreds of athletes wore Maxfly, Victory and Dragonfly during Paris 2024 games, some of them became champions.

They gave more meanings to the kicks through the track they ran and the people they inspired.

For me, that is the performance culture in sports that brings people united.

Alphafly 3

Alphafly 3 is another product I worked on during my time in NXT innovation design team. Numerous of design iterations fuels the current inline design we see today, also inspire what comes next in the very near future. While I am not able to share the process due to confidentiality, I would love to celebrate through some outstanding athletes in Paris 2024 games.

Biggest kudos to inline running design crew for carrying the design through. And my design mentor, teammates in innovation, Leo Chang (Alphafly3), Adam Thuss (2024 T&F)
